Excellent points (especially the DX7 presets). Marketing and music are
two distinct, separate and different things. Marketing would have the
public at large believe that they can actually create music (all you need
to do is to buy THIS keyboard), music on the other hand is a far more
critical judge.
We cannot depend on marketing to provide us with truly wonderful
instruments. We can only depend on marketing providing (good or bad)
things that they can hawk to the masses. We must remember what the
purpose of marketing is and not to expect more than that.
If a truly unique sound or instrument is to be produced, I think it is
more likely to come from the mind of a truly unique individual rather
than from someone plinking around on a keyboard after being impressed by
demo settings in the music store.
The essence of music is do-it-yourself. I think that's why we're all here.
