[sdiy] Buchla's back

True. From what I’ve read, none of the head honchos at ARP did very well
after the company self-destructed. I wonder if they at least recovered some
of the losses by selling the Chroma to Fender. On the other hand, I wonder
if the name, rights and IP could be bought cheaply by some SDIY millionaire
with a lot of time on his/her hands (are there any of you out there? If so,
are you looking to adopt a 40-ish heir?). To tell you the truth, I wonder if
any of the ARP stuff is still protected. Did Fender buy ALL the ARP patents,
ideas, etc, or just the Chroma? If someone was going to reissue an Odyssey
or something like that, I would hope they’d at least attempt to do the right
thing, but I doubt that anything legally enforceable is still in effect.

I think Tom Oberheim was just a little too early in his ‘comeback.’ >From
what I’ve read, the Marion rack box (MS-2?) was an improvement even over the
capabilities of the Matrix line. Perhaps that with a third wavetable DCO
and/or some nifty waveshaping could be a hot item now. Maybe.

Considering how badly Mr. Pearlman got burned by the fall of ARP, I doubt
he's got much interest in coming up with anything new. I believe he's also
turning 80 this year.

I could see something new coming from Oberheim, but his last unit didn't do
very well IIRC. Since Buchla, Moog, and Dave Smith are back in force, maybe
he'll jump in.

Anyone care to place bets on (another) PPG revival? ;)
