Jim said the magic word: "heat sink" (alright, so it's two words...)
One major factor you should never overlook, whether desinging a new power
supply or repairing/refurbing an old one (it's one of the first things I do
to the Prophet 5s that cross my bench) is make sure the heat sinking of the
regulators is more than adequate for the task -- and being generous with
the heatsink compound doesn't hurt, either.
~GMM (taking a rare break from the repair bench, which is looking more like
a fort with all the ailing Prophets stacked around it....)
