This does not relate so much to Tim's post, but this week was my first
attempt in years to make analog optocouplers. 

I found some yellow LEDs and photoresistors which are about 1M when
dark. I found a case which they fit in perfectly! I have a couple of
aluminum Hafler knobs which I had slightly messed up in trying to fit
to some odd pots years back. I drilled again with a bit which
facilitates just fitting the photoresistor in where the pot shaft was
supposed to be. Then I drilled all the way through with a smaller bit.
On what was the top side, one can drop the LEDs, which are suspended by
the plastic flared edge on their bottoms. With an LED inserted all of
the way, the photoresistor rests exactly under the set screw! Quite
decent results, I think.
