[sdiy] First ICs (was Top Ten ICs)

I think my first IC (after the 'Space-Age Integrated Circuit' on my 100
in 1 kit) was an LM709 in a Science Fair P-Box "IC AM Radio" kit bought
at Radio Shack for a hard earned $5.95.

At that time I also did my first and only repair of an IC.
I somehow managed to blow the '2SC' transistor in the 'IC' on my
100-in-1 kit. So I scrapped it off and carefully soldered another NPN
silicon transistor (pulled from an old AM car radio) in its place.
I remember the distinct sweet smell that the epoxy coating on the 'IC'
gave off while I was soldering the new transistor to it.

It worked great after the repair!
The 'RF Amplifier Radio' (project #67) worked even better than before
with the new transistor - I was thrilled!
