Rotary switches aren't really that expensive, less than sealed pots.
Check this out, courtesy of Dave Bradley's excellent Hot Rod MOTM
site, page http://www.hotrodmotm.com/parts_list.htm:

Mountain Switch sealed 12 position 1 pole rotary switch
(adjustable stop) - used for Larry Hendry's JLH-831 and JLH-822
control voltage switching modules.

    Mouser #105-13571, 1-9 $2.57, 10-99 $2.14

Those are the shorting (make before break) version. The non-shorting
(break before make) switch is Mouser #105-14571. (For comparison, I
think that my Korg's VCO switches are non-shorting.) Multi-pole
versions are also available. These have movable stops, too; e.g., the
12-pos switch can have from 2 to 12 positions.

Larry, have those switches been reliable?
