How much hardware do you know that will survive with one power rail missing?

Due to a severe absence of clue I powered up the laser head I'm modding 
with the -15V line replaced with an open circuit.

Micro - dead. DAC and scanner output - pinned to 15V. Galvo drivers - 
missing in action.

I thought this was going to be a very expensive mistake. But when I figured 
out where the problem was I reconnected the -15V, powered up again and now 
it's all fine.

I'm impressed. The people who designed this thing knew what they were 
doing. :-)
