imes have changed. All you need is a programming cable thanks to Flash
and EEPROM technology and plenty of on-chip space.  Today's
microcontrollers run circles around state-of-the-art microprocessors of
a decade ago which and should be plenty enough for typical applications.

(Besides: everyone should own a multi-programmer, it's vital for
reverse-engineering :)
