I looked at this a few years ago. The problems are:

1) If you're using parallel connections

... you'd need to have some form of multi-pole connector that is easy to use
(IDC?), and not prone to interference

2) If you're using serial connections

... the complexity difference between a VCO and a simple adder is very
small - just a matter of programming. With analogue, there is a large
difference.

My conclusion was that it's better to implement it on one chip.
