Could work... but the response and stability would not
be guaranteed without the recommended capacitors. This
might make the circuit slow.

Better might be to make a 5V signal with the regulator
and use a transistor level shifter...

Or the zener... which is the most minimal approach.

Still... if it works for you, it works for you. I'd
call this an Apollo 13 solution  :^P  (as long as it
gets you home... its beautiful !!!)
