In case anybody missed it (I know I sure as heck did), YESTERDAY was the
50th anniversary of the introduction of the first mass-produced transistor
radio, the TR-1. Great site with lots of links here:

I read the article in "American Heritage..." magazine and it was excellent.
Texas Instruments was really pushing the envelope by trying to get the price
WAY down and the production levels WAY up on transistors at the time. The
effort TI put into mass producing the transistor made a HUGE difference in
the price and availability of our little silicon and germanium-based
friends. With their level of success in semiconductors and mass-production
techniques, it's amazing that TI bombed so badly in the consumer market. 

Anyway, happy belated birthday, TR-1!!! And many thanks for bringing us
cheap transistors to make synths with!
