Sinclair ZX81, to be exact. Its BASIC didn't know about READ/DATA
statements, so to be able to save your assembly program you had to first
create a horribly long REM line (which took ages since with every
typed character the keyboard response got slower) and then POKEing the
data into the REM line.

That line could be then SAVEd.

Needless to say that you couldn't just RUN that program but rather start
it with RAND USR(16514).

PET BASIC knew about READ/DATA.

(Now why do I still remember all this stuff... I guess there's a certain
age where any experience makes it right into ROM.)

To bring this somewhat back on-topic: is there any good resource about
tape data recording and the various formats/methods used, especially on
synthesizers? WAV files are more reliable than old program cassette
tapes... Plus you don't have to rewind.
