If you're going to use solvents, why not use DeOxit, or something 
similar?    At least you'd be fairly certain it wouldn't damage the 
wiper.  You could then relubricate the errr... shaft (tough not to make the 
shaft jokes, isn't it?) with Cramolin, etc

My biggest fear with WD40 is that it's conductive when dry.   I learned 
that after using it to dry a distributor cap and spark plug wires... and 
getting bolted with a few thousand volts immediately afterwards.
