Yeah, I've looked at those too. I like the idea of the thumbwheel switches
with the little numeric display (like the ones shown on Jorgen's synth).
Unfortunately, Those things are a little expensive too. At least I see them
available as surplus every once in a while. As far as the rotary BCD or Hex
switches, I can see how they would be useful, but I really would like them
in a panel mount. The PCB mount ones I've seen look like they're only made
for occasional duty, and would not be anchored firmly enough for regular
use. PCB mounting panel controls worries me, because you're stressing the
solder joints whenever you move the control. Generally, the stress is low,
but when you reach the end of a pot's travel or flip that switch back and
forth in time with a bumping rhythm (like I know we all do late at night), I
just have to think it's going to eventually cause problems (unless the
control is both PCB mount AND panel mounted). Just my $US0.02 as a
mechanical designer.
Still, maybe some nice surplus BDC thumbwheel switches would do the trick.
Good idea, Harry.
Tim (I want to start a night club for synth geeks and call it "The Solder
Joint") Servo
