the good thing about 1206 is that they can easily fit at least 2 traces between pads, while 0603 hardly takes only one.

Yeah, 1206 are disonaurs ;) Then what about MELF resistors. They are just like thru-hole 1/4W without leads. Man, those are ugly!

but seriously, 1206 spans over 4 SOIC leads, that's a lot of space wasted if you want to put e.g. feedback resistors between pin 1 and 2 of dual opamp. 0603 is just right here.
