I have been known to use two soldering irons at the same time, one in each
hand, to remove passive SMDs with 2 leads. It might sound awkward to
maneuver two irons at once, but it isn't too bad. One of those
tweezer-style soldering irons would be nice, but the only ones I know of
are rather expensive.

Of course, this trick only works well for simple parts with 2 leads.  :)
