when I said Ic, I mean collector current.. hfe would be forward beta, 
thats current gain.  In school they taught opamps before transistors 
also, so that doesn't seem backward. it's easier to work with an opamp 
probably, but seeing how they work would come after learning about 
transistors.

yes, but this distributor is not in the US and I am. I have ordered some 
THAT2180 VCAs from here in the past: http://www.profusionplc.com/
Those VCAs were pretty expensive but they will ship worldwide, and 
really quickly, and cheap shipping.
