Eric Barbour just wrote a fascinating article about digital tubes of this
sort including digital/analog storage based on vacuum tube technology--the
forerunner of Harry's beloved BBD's!:

I have two of the CG tubes I picked up at a hamfest for $10 a while back.
Took me a while to figure out what in the world they were.
