[sdiy] Potentiometers, changing response

Talking about pots... i know this is a dumb question.. but i cant remember it...
in a circuit there is a 100K pot... it's dead...the only substitute available is a 500k pot... what to do?

    I have a vague recollection of see somewhere something about attaching resistors to pot legs to achieve different response. Anybody have any links, info, or two cents to thro around ?
