But they use the mike intensionally like that.

Mikes like sm58 are cardioids. This is done by having openings at the
side that allow the sound to hit the back of the membrane as well as
the front, which has two effects:
- noise from the back (monitor speakers and audience) is cancelled out.
- the proximity effect. This is a figure 8 and cardioid only feature.
The proximity effect gives a heavy bass to the voice when you sing
close to the mike.

But being this close, the mike will 'pop' on every P and B you say.
So, by folding your hand around the mike, you can reduce the airflow
into the side-holes, thus making the mike a bit more omni-ish, thus
reducing the proximity effect.
So you can be close, loud, bassy and popless at the same time.

Takes practice to do it well...
