i've used a 9v battery and a switch (based on a broken kick drum pedal)
as a gate trig source, which worked fine until it fell to pieces.

Yes, but the supply needs to be well regulated, or you get (very
obvious) hum on the control voltage (whihc CAN be a very nice effect,
but not always). I recommend a 9v battery.
Don't worry about a current limiting resistor.
