Schedule 40 refers to the wall thickness, and isn't related to the material.
I spec schedule 40 steel columns for buildings all the time.
ABS is typically black plastic, while PVC is white. Not sure of any health
risks involved with ABS, but it seems like almost everything is bad for you
these days!
