In Bob Pease's book on analog troubleshooting (which it is madness not to have, IMHO) he shows how to make an active CRO probe (fet preamp) with input cap of much less than 1 pf. Which solves the problem of "it only works when i have the probe on it". paul perry Melbourne AUstraia (too hot).
