Once you start talking about using a CD disc as the tonewheel, the thought
of simply burning a CD-R with a distinctive optical pattern comes to mind.
Would this be possible?

What I have in mind, would rely on a modified CD drive to read the optical
pattern. It wouldn't try to actually read digital bytes from the disc, but
simply translate the reflective pattern into a waveform. The speed of the
motor would be altered to control the pitch. 

I also have to admit this is getting very bizarre.  :)

Yeah right, as if it wasn't bizarre already.  :)
