Didn't mention if you were running some flavor of Windows. So here goes for
the Windows stuff. But it's been a long time and I can't remember what
belongs to what OS.

Some of the OS' have the ability to repair what they call the master boot
record or mbr. Depending on the OS you might be able to use this as a
command line option for format or fdisk (format mbr or fdisk mbr). Can't
remember which. This will rewrite the boot record on the disk. Also with W2K
there are some recover process' that can be ran from the boot discs.

Keep in mind there are a number of things that can hose a dos installation
on a modern PC. Main thing I ran across in the 512 meg disc limit along with
a 16 bit FAT.
