Hi Daryl,
The tape heads shouldn't require extra power to operate for playback, just a
high gain amplifier. Of the four wires on each head, two should be for each
channel, just measure with an ohmmeter to find out which ones have continuity
between them, and connect them to the input of the amplifier (one to input, one
to ground). Each coil should measure somewhere between 50 and 1000 ohms. Either
the record or erase head should work OK for this purpose.
