[sdiy] Tape head collage (pretty much not synth DIY, sorry)

I've obtained tape heads from a non-working Sony 1/4"
stereo reel to reel. I want to make a collage of cut
up tapes glued to a board so i can run the head around
over it (a guy i used to work with told me he did this
in the 70's). There are 4 wires coming off, i'm
assuming they are for power and output. So far, no
luck experimenting with hookups, did warm up the head
though. Also tried both of the heads that i have
because one is the record head, and the play head is
what i need i think (can't tell which is which).
Anyone care to throw out some ideas? how many volts,
+/-, etc....
