small LCDs with touchscreen are cheap. Axcel looks cool (I drooled watching Axcel video presentation), but with today's technology it may be easier to use a LCD. 320x240 backlit with touchscreen can cost under 30$. The rest is in the firmware, and graphic controller.
It could then consist of 4 or 9 tiles that you zoom into by touching their areas. When zoomed, it'd show, say, 12x16 matrix. If something is to be connected, touch the spot on the matrix and a square appears. Of course, appropriate connection between modules is then made, but it's a minor issue, playing with LCD is cool enough, who needs to use it for anything else ;)
Or better - touch, and virtual slider appears, so you could control CV for VCA at this matrix point.
