The PC900 can be used with a much larger resistor than 220 ohms. I have 
connected it to an input pin of a micro that has an internal pull-up, 
with no additional pull-up resistor at all.

According to the data sheet the risse time is less than 0.5 
microseconds with a 10k load resistance.
