I was thinking even earlier -- pre-electric.  All mechanical, no 
magnets, no electricity.  Not even pneumatics involved.  Truly 
nightmarish combinations of slots and levers multiplied to an almost 
obscene extent.
I suspect similar issues to this, and other synth topics, would have 
been all the rage (puns intended) on the discussion groups of the time, 
had there been such ;-)
