no reason at all, aside from personal prefference.

why should their be lines?
As long as you can patch anything to anything, does it matter how the module
does what it does?
Its then down purely to taste. without the 'lines' it allows people to stuff
a DSP in a module and have say, a whole vocoder in one module...

I think hybrid systems (well designed ones) offer the best of both worlds,
in terms of sound and flexability.
