If you were going to do that you might as well make the entire internal bus 
fiber and be done with it.

Which could actually work. Gigabit ethernet cables and converters aren't 
exactly expensive any more. You obviously wouldn't use ethernet on the 
cable, but if you could find a decent cheap converter with raw data at the 
output you could use fiber to replace a big, complicated and unwieldy 
digital backplane with something simpler, cheaper and with enough bandwidth 
for a huge switching system. And probably more reliably too.

Big issues with guaranteed bandwidth and delivery time there. And issues 
with FCA and other certification if you try to roll your own protocol.

If there's an off-the-shelf solution for wireless that's synchronous rather 
than packet based, I'd like to know about it because it's exactly what I 
need for my ever expanding laser controller.
