Paul,
If you're willing to digitize everything, perhaps you are also willing
to use soft envelopes? And why not soft LFOs, too? And hey, we could
do the mixing digitally! I guess we won't need all those VCAs,
either...

I'm not really dismissing your idea but I am wondering where you would
draw the analog/digital lines.

A hybrid system can be amazingly powerful, that's for sure. (As can a
purely digital system.)
