Not sure what you mean, Peter. I guess that "the first one" means
Morbius's proposal? (It's only on the Yahoo group, sorry SDIY folks.)
His system and mine are very different, but they use the same
imaginary method to select a preset.

I was trying to be in realistic fantasyland. ;-)  Meaning a system to
work with existing Synthesizers.com and compatible modules.

Are you talking about completely new modules?

If one is going to build a preset-compatible system from the ground
up, one major issue that should be dealt with is that of voltage
levels. A 21st century modular should (IMHO) use lower voltages.
Perhaps 0 to 5V for everything, or maybe even 0 to 3.3V. Besides
reducing power consumption, this opens up new options, like digital
potentiometers that can only handle 0-5V signals.
