The tip most likely has a copper core and is plated with Fe/Ni. Once the 
plating is scratched through (that happens fast), the copper readily 
dissolves in solder... If you don't want to pony up for "permanent" 
tips, you can file the plating away where the solder should wet and then 
carefully hammer the tip into shape (again). The hammering hardens the 
surface so that the erosion takes place at a much slower pace. Plus 
without the plating the tip is much easier to coat with solder to start 
with.
