They were matched and put together when I got 'em.

Yeah, they used either 2N3904/2N3906 or TZ81/TZ581.

I have no idea. I have a curve tracer, and some time back hooked up a
"matched pair" of ECG power transistors -- the unit has two sets of
connections and a switch to go back and forth -- and I couldn't see how they
were all that well matched, but I don't know what characteristic they were
supposed to be matched for.
