[sdiy] anyone have experience with Putnies?

I have an early VCS3 that has problems. When I bought it 10 years ago
the left channel output amplifier (GE PA234 anyone?) was blown. I have
never found the part to replace it so I am thinking I'll replace them
with the 741 and push pull stage that was in the later ones. The thing
that concerns me is the power supply. I just replaced the big
electrolytics in the bottom with new ones, but the two resistors at the
top of Board A get REALLY hot, like burn my hand hot. I assume this is
not right, but what causes it? All the parts of the synth work, except
the one output channel. If I do what Graham Hinton says and replace the
power section, how is the best way to do it? I guess I could rig in some
modern regulators where the transistors are now, replace the caps and
remove everything else.

I'm thinking I'll use little strip boards on wire legs on top of where
the amp chips were, but the power supply is confusing to me....

anyone done this before?

Mark
