Of course not, you mentioned the EMS Synthi, it also has only one meter 
to do both jobs.

I'd use just a standard inverting summing amplifier here, one input is 
your voltage input and the other input is connected to a switch that 
lets you turn on or off a constant offset voltage that puts your meter 
into center position (when the first input is at 0 volts).
