The mods you mention are easy to do and may help, but...
Another issue is that it's not patchable. This limits what it can do quite
a bit. It also has no noise, no waveshaper, no ring modulator and it's MIDI
implementation doesn't lend itself to pitches other than a 12 note western
tempered scale (yes, it does allow pitchbend, but only plus or minus one
semitone). Most of the stuff I've heard in the bleep/bloop/percussive world
doesn't really care about scale too much.
My opinion is that the FatMan (out of the box) is a melodic bass synth or
melodic lead. Moreso a bass synth.
