Well, there would be no telemarketers, governments would know less
about the citizens (no Big Brother), one wouldn't be able to nuke CDs
in a microwave and pipe organs (perhaps with blowers powered by steam
or waterwheels) connected to all sorts of interesting mechanical
devices---some which we've never seen, and perhaps variations on steam
calliopes, would be what we'd be hacking on (perhaps using hacksaws,
amongst other tools).  Who knows what types of interesting sounds we'd
be making music with?  :-)  Perhaps we'd  even be making music via
chemical and chemical-mechanical means.  

Out of curiosity, has anyone connected any electronically controlled
mechanical devices, other than spring reverbs, to their synthesis
equipment---perhaps using microphones or other transducers?  It seems
that the possibilities are most interesting.
