If anything, being large probably makes your task easier! The
portability of a 606 or DR110 can be neat, but sometimes its impossible
to fit a certain modification you want to do within the small case.

Most of the older drum machines are probably transistor twin-t filters
and noise sources. Of course some also include extra circuits for
generating weird beats.

With most analog drum circuits, a pulse of 5v or so goes through the
transistors in certain parts, and makes them ring within certain
frequencies. Like a mini resonant filter. Add some back-biased
transistor noise, maybe a little tone control, and there's your drums!

I'd just try to find what looks like the beginning of each voice, and
apply triggers while listening for output. The S-trigger circuit might
work with the switches. Doesn't hurt to have a circuit which you know
makes a clean trigger, so you know the voltage and duration. Really
though, most analog circuits are not too picky. You might even be able
to ring those twin-ts with entire drum sounds from another machine and
they'll sound wild
