the quick answer is: yes, they are noisy, not usable for audio.
But depending what you want to supply with it and if used the right way it may be usefull sometimes. Besides of noisy power lines, it also generates interference, so placing any other circuitry in not so close proximity will spoil that one's performance too.

I am contemplating using a DC-DC converter for a simple +/- supply from a single small DC input. Are they noisy or quirky or have some hidden secret for their proper use? They seem simple but I never see them used.
