Oddly enough, I was thinking the same thing recently. I decided to start
taking pictures of things I work on in the future, (not that I work on a
lot of gear these days.) A digital camera with decent macro capability is
great for this sort of thing. I wouldn't do this with a film camera,
because of the extra expense and hassle involved, but with digital it's
very easy and inexpensive.

Perhaps more of us should start photographically documenting some of the
gear we work on, for the benefit of others? I'm currently documenting the
internals of my Synare drums for a fellow list member, who needed to
"un-modify" a dysfunctional modified Synare.
