I don't know that this would be worth pursuing on
'80s-vintage gear.  A lot of that stuff used delta
modulation to save memory, meaning that the actual
resolution that gets recorded in memory is only 8,
6, or even 4 bits.  If you start zeroing-out or
one'ing-out bits, I think the result is likey to
turn into undifferentiated noise, or worse, nasty
pops and squeals, very quickly.  If you decide to
experiment with it, don't wear headphones and keep
the volume down until you know what the result is.
