Mouser does have the 24mm Alphas in plain vanilla audio taper w/o detents.

If that is not an option, the 16mm versions w detents are probably constructed with a notched wheel on back with a ball bearing and leaf sping. If that is the case, you can remove the leaf spring and bb. The pot will then move freely.
