Hello DIY'ers,
I may regret doing this, but here goes... Someone is auctioning a 500 piece
lot of DBX ups1252H2 VCA IC's on Ebay right now. The opening bid is $99.99,
and so far, no one has stepped up to bid. Maybe there's someone among us who
needs 500 decent-quality VCA chips? Or maybe there's enough of us who want to
go in on a group buy?
FYI, these are the VCA's that are found in several high quality DBX studio
compressors (the 160X uses a couple of them), as well as compressors made by
several other pro audio companies. They are single-channel VCA's, 8-pin inline
chips (SIP). The control current conforms to a Logarithmic curve, so they're
best used in audio applications. However, it's likely that the control curve
could be "linearized" by using the technique that Mike Irwin developed for the
SSM log-response VCA (see:
http://www.reed-electronics.com/ednmag/contents/images/72502di.pdf ), although it would require two of them to achieve this.
The DBX 1252 is very similar to the current That Corp VCA's -- Indeed, the That
VCA IC design was based on the original DBX 1252.
Anyway, there it is. I would be up to putting together a group buy with SDIY
folks, but it would have to come together quick -- the auction ends at 1:00
AM Monday morning, WST (about 10 hours from now). Email me quickly if you want
to collaborate on this. Let me know how many pieces you want, and how much
you're willing to pay per piece (the final price may go up near the end of the
auction). Again, respond QUICKLY.
