Bucket Brigade Device
It's a line of capacitors and FET transistors where the FETs is clocked so that
they pass on the charge between the capacitors just like a bucket brigade
passes on the buckets of water to help turning out the fire.
Since this is Synth-DIY I guess you should also include another definition:
The device among any which anoys Harry the most. Let's just say he has issues
with BBDs.
CCD is another variant on the same scheme. Popular in cameras these days.

No, they are not the same family. They where rather competing on the same
market. Which you prefer is a matter of taste. Both are approximating
unobtainablility.
