The interesting thing on "good" sounding vco is,
that most people never heard a raw vco, since
it is not possible to plug in a cord directly at the vco
buffer in most synths. So the vco signal is very often
filtered and vca-ed. This is of course different for
modular synths.
When considering sample based (DSP) machines:
these are heavily bandwidth limited (Mr. Nyquist).
That means that we have strong low pass filtering
involved, and this will always change the signal
shape, Gibbs phenomenon and properties of the
Fourier transform apply. Creating an alias free
saw wave in a digital synth is no a trivial task.
I do not think that a properly designed interpolation
or anti alias filter is audible, but if you process
the outcomming signal further (i.e. comparator etc.)
it can certainly make a difference.
