[sdiy] inductors, B fields, and confusion

Magnus,

Now you have my curiosity. Under what circumstances would you consider 8
ohm speaker drivers a poor choice? There are two cases to consider:

1. Drivers in a passive system where the amplifier is loaded by the
crossover circuit and

2. Active systems where the driver is directly connected to the
amplifier, having an electronic crossover prior to the amp.

In the first case, the amplifier probably has a more difficult load.
Particular care must also be made by the crossover circuit designer to
bring proper impedance considerations to the design, both input
(amplifier loading) and output (to the speaker). In this case I can see
no difference in selecting, say a 16 ohm driver over an 8 ohm drive in
that both the driver and the circuit will be known quantities.

In case 2, there certainly could be issues with amplifiers not liking
too low of an input impedance (speaker), but I would think the load
presented to the amplifier would be a drive load handled by the amp more
easily that a crossover circuit.

Regards, Scott Evans
