I'd be interested in knowing how the hell you do *anything* with those 
machines...

We used to be a service center for those products.  At that time they were not 
into releasing ANY technical information whatsoever.  Repairs more often than 
not consisted of a board swap,  and nothing else.  It took some serious 
arm-twisting one time to get them to part with a schematic for a keyboard (!) 
matrix,  so I could nail down bad solder joints,  for a unit which was out of 
warranty and for a customer that was *very* unhappy about their attitude.

Has technical info on these things become available since then?
